The things about Autorun.inf
Autorun.inf, as most USB flash drive owners know, is a virus. Sad, but true. Most individuals consider this thing as a virus.
Well, its not.
Autorun.inf is a command in getting your USB Flash Disk or Cd/Dvd drives to perform certain actions automatically and is also used to customize looks in the My Computer.
Why is autorun.inf considered as a "virus" by some Antivirus Programs?
Viruses are not some simple scripts that are easily created. When a certain virus infects or holds into your flash drive, it will be easily erased or repaired by certain antivirus programs. These viruses are just hidden in the drive and could be easily detected by security programs. Therefore, hackers/virus makers developed some kind of script and made it into an Autorun.inf file, which means EVERYTIME, a user places her USB on a computer, the virus will automatically be processed and run. When this happens, there is no telling how much damage your computer will take- files erased, registry edited, which just leads to one solution. A full drive formatting (including the USB drive).
Use it!!!
Let's try to make a simple Autorun for your drive.
First, open Notepad and type:
[autorun]
That will be the first line on the notepad. The next step is to add a value with an option. For instance, a customized icon.
Place a desired *.ico file on the root of your flash drive (root means no open folders, just the drive). Next you place the code:
icon=psalm.ico
"or" you have place an exe:
icon=psalm.exe
"psalm.ico" and "psalm.exe" is the value of the "icon" in this script. You can change it in what your icon name is. Placing this code will make your flash drive icon change to the ones you chose.
What about your own label? To customize your drive's label, place this code on the next line:
label=Psalm's Drive
You can also change the label into whatever suits you.
So this three lines makes big changes.
[autorun]
icon=psalm.ico
label=Psalm's Drive
Save the notepad file as "autorun.inf" (without quotes) in the root of your USB drive. Then try reinserting it and go into My Computer and see the changes...
