Rounding of Numbers

Numbers

Rounding of Numbers is a pretty simple topic for Grade 6 students and High Schools. But what bugs me is why does college students and professors still have had trouble with this. (including me).

Ok, to set things straight and finalize the issue i'll tell how its done (with the help of google).

We all know that we "round up" a number by simply looking at the next number next to it and see if it is greater than 5.

Example: if we round 407.89 to the nearest tenths, the answer is 407.9

We "round down" a number if the next number to it is below 5.

Example: if we round 1.831 to the nearest hundredths, the answer is 1.83

Easy right? BUT, what if the number is 5? (ex: 1.925) Will we round up or down?

There is this rule- if the "number" on the LEFT side of the "number 5" is ODD, we round "UP", otherwise, we round "DOWN"

Example: 1.675, if we round to the nearest hundredths, the answer will be 1.68, because the number "7" is ODD.

2.65, if we round to the nearest tenths, will be 2.6, because "6" is EVEN.

This could be a very confusing matter and even I am still a bit confused. But I hope that this will resolve issues out there! ^^
